DisplayCAL is written in Python and uses the 3rd-party packages NumPy, wxPython (GUI[4] toolkit), Certifi, PyGObject or dbus-python for Linux (required for Wayland support with colord), as well as Python extensions for Windows, comtypes and the Python WMI module to provide Windows-specific functionality. Also there are several distributions out there that are based on one in the above list (e.g. Linux Mint which is based on Ubuntu). This means that packages for that base distribution should also work on derivatives, you just need to know which version the derivative is based upon and pick your download accordingly.

After satisfying all additional requirements for using the source code, you can simply run any of the included .pyw files from a terminal, e.g. python2 DisplayCAL.pyw, or install the software so you can access it via your desktop's application menu with python2 setup.py install. Run python2 setup.py --help to view available options.
If your measurement device is a i1 Display 2, i1 Display Pro, ColorMunki Display, DTP94, Spyder2/3/4/5, you'll want to import the colorimeter corrections that are part of the vendor software packages, which can be used to better match the instrument to a particular type of display. Normally a delay of 200 msec is allowed between changing a patch color in software, and that change appearing in the displayed color itself. Conda is an open-source package and environment management system that runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Conda quickly installs, runs, and updates packages and their dependencies. It also easily creates, saves, loads, and switches between environments on your local computer. It was created for Python programs, but it can package and distribute software for any language.
Following their own instructions for Mac OSX, I installed the Spyder3Express software for use with my Spyder2 device. The installation was flawless. The software recognized my hardware and ran all the way through the calibration. When the calibration process said Measuring is Complete and I clicked Finish, I got the following error;

Most IDEs support many different programming languages and contain many more features. They can, therefore, be large and take time to download and install. You may also need advanced knowledge to use them properly.
Other than this, all differences between the three packages lie in the software, which is intentionally capped on the lesser models. This makes the Spyder5Express a great deal if you can live with its software limitations and the lack of ambient light measurement. Keep in mind that some of those extra features, especially in the Elite version, are of very limited real world utility.
Software download and installation is straightforward, but requires internet access to generate an activation code that ties the hardware serial number to the software. I assume this was done to limit piracy, since the only difference between the cheapest Express and the Elite versions is software.
After saving the profile, you can preview the results by examining a standard test image and switching between calibrated and uncalibrated views. Pro and Elite versions allow you to choose any image for this comparison, while the Express version is limited to the target provided with the software.
Those problems are not specific to Spyder5, but related to the limitations of TN screens. i1Display Pro exhibited the same bad results, but seems to be more forgiving of lower quality panels and produced better profiles overall. On the other hand, i1Display Pro profiles had a strong red cast, while Spyder5 profiles had a more neutral rendition with a slightly green cast, which gave me a better match to my reference display. Alternative software, like dispcalGUI + Argyll CMS, ColorEyes Pro or basICColor made no difference. I tried them all. TN displays are doomed. :) 2ff7e9595c
